The Power of Consistency
When it comes to fitness, like many things, consistency is key.
Simply put: the individual who trains consistently over a long period of time will outperform the individual who trains (no matter the level of intensely) on-and-off over a long period of time. The goal doesn’t matter: whether a client wants to gain muscle, lose weight, go through a body recomposition - the more consistent individual will reach his or her goal faster.
To go right along with this theory, I’ve come to another conclusion: individuals who are willing to train no matter the circumstances will find more consistency, and therefore reach their goals faster.
I’ve had this conversation many times, especially with adult clients. A client will come in and tell me how tired they are, how stressed they are, how bad a night’s sleep they got, etc. etc. etc. And yet they showed up, and that’s all that matters. When having this conversation, my response is always the same: “these are the workouts that really make the difference.” Anyone can train when they feel good. Anyone can train when the circumstances line up perfectly. But the clients and individuals who train no matter the circumstances and don’t skip workouts because they don’t feel like showing up are the clients who will see the biggest changes.
Having trouble finding consistency in your fitness journey? My suggestion would be to find some kind of community to keep you accountable. Whether that’s a trainer, a workout partner or a group you train alongside on a consistent basis, knowing there’s someone on the other side waiting for you will usually give you necessary kick in the butt to stop hitting snooze and get out of bed.
